Bonjour tout le monde ! I am a third year student majoring in Applied Psychology. I took French throughout high school and decided to continue learning French at UIC because I enjoyed learning about French culture, and I really appreciated how learning French allowed me to connect and empathize more with other people who were learning another language. In the future, I’d like to pursue a career in social work so being able to connect with and support people, embrace differences, and create a safe space for them is very important to me. In the French course I took at UIC, my learning environment was very supportive and fostered a safe space for us to make mistakes and progress in French. Essentially, I want to be able to support students learning French in similar ways. Let’s improve our French together!

Bonjour! I am a third-year student majoring in neuroscience and minoring in French on a pre-medical track. I was born in Chicago and graduated from Lane Tech High School. I volunteer as a lab and research assistant at two different labs connected to UIC and UI Health, in addition to volunteering at the Surgical and Emergency services of UI Health. I am an editor at UIC Journal for Pre-Health Affiliated Students and a member of the Honors College and Honors College Advisory Board. Also, I am a part of the UIC Archery Club. Though, I enjoy learning languages and traveling the most. Alongside French, I speak fluent English and Turkish, and hope to learn Chinese. My experience with languages has given me many resources that can be used by students for language exposure, and I am happy to share my tips for learning languages!

Hi there! I’m an Economics major with minors in Finance and Political Science, and I’m an international student from Ukraine. I can speak Ukrainian, English, and Russian but it seems like three languages aren’t enough for me! I believe French is a truly beautiful language, and my desire to speak it keeps pushing me forward in learning it. I know how hard it can be to study something new, so I decided to use whatever French skills I already have to help you succeed as well! I really love helping others and hopefully I can be of some help to you!

“I am an Applied Psychology and Applied Statistics double major – and thinking of adding French! I love to explore and learn new things. In addition to peer tutoring, I am a Resident Assistant in Campus Housing. French has always been important to me and taking classes at UIC has increased my love for the language. I hope to foster that love and appreciation of French in other students.”

“I’m a Biology major with a Mathematics minor. However, French allows me to express myself in certain ways that I wouldn’t have in English or in Spanish (my native tongue). It’s almost like I’m a different person. French has allowed me to gain insight into other people’s viewpoints and concerns from the roots of the Ancien Régime to the current Yellow Vest movement. To learn French is to become a citizen of the world.”

Hi, I’m an international student from Pakistan, majoring in computer science and tutoring in French. I’ve always loved to learn new languages. I grew up in Canada, which is a French speaking country. I am a first generation college student.
One of the inspirations that motivated me to learn new languages is this quote:
“If you talk to a man in a language he understands, that goes to his head. If you talk to him in his own language, that goes to his heart.” –Nelson Mandela

Salut! I’m a first year student at UIC, majoring in political science but thinking of changing to a language oriented major. I’m currently living with my family in Chicago and commute to school on a daily basis. Spanish is my first language and I tutor in French. I started learning French when I was in 6th grade and immediately fell in love with the language and culture. I hope by tutoring in French I can help other students gain the same love and understanding for the French language. When I graduate, I want to be a language teacher in a Francophone or Latin country.

I study Policy, International Trade, and Development, along with a French minor. I’m originally from the West Side of Chicago and get to commute every day to school. I get excited every time I hear a different language on the train. No matter our field of study, languages will always give a leg up in the job market. I speak Spanish at home, but also speak French, Portuguese, American Sign Language, and Pidgin English. Languages have helped me connect with people from all over the world and I hope to work with other students to work towards a global awareness.

Hello there! I transferred in from Harold Washington community college. I am like you, a student taking French courses at UIC. I am pursuing a psychology degree and a minor in French. I started at the 100-level at UIC and have advanced from there. I have been in your shoes! When I was in French 104, I used to come to LCLC Peer tutoring twice, sometimes three times a week, and I improved dramatically. I look forward to sharing my learned tips in your French pursuits!

“For me, French has been a gateway into better understanding world history, culture, linguistics, allowing me to see the world as interconnected and complex. Since I began studying French, I have grown in appreciation and respect for those who undertake learning a foreign language, as it is an ongoing process. I am ready to share my personal passion for language learning with UIC BLP students.”

I am double majoring in Communications and French and I work full time. I’ve been interested in languages since I was a child, but started learning French about two years ago. What I didn’t know was how welcoming the local French community would be, or how many great opportunities it would open up when I started using my French with others. I want to help other students feel comfortable in French so that they can experience all of the things that a new language offers.

“I am a Biological Sciences major and a fluent French speaker. I also speak my native languages from the Ivory Coast and other language from Mali, so I know what it is like to speak and learn several languages. Hello! I am a second year student majoring in Political Science and Economics, with a minor in French, and certificate in Russian. I am also on the Pre-Law track. I chose to study and tutor in French because I think it’s a beautiful, though sometimes complicated language. I speak Romanian at home, so I know how it is to learn new languages! I drive from the western suburbs to UIC, but I spend a lot of time in the northwestern suburbs at my church. I have used my language skills at my retail job, and I plan to go into immigration law where connecting with clients through their language would be ultra-helpful. I am excited to help other students find their passion for languages!

Hello! I am a public health major with minors in public policy and disability and human development. I had some French experience in middle school and high school, but started at UIC with French 103. At first, I didn’t expect to stick with the language after the BLP, but found that I enjoyed learning it more than I thought I would! I am a commuter student and know what it is like to juggle and balance various responsibilities on and off campus. I look forward to practicing my own French skills while assisting others in learning concepts.

Hey everyone, my name is Izzy! I am a political science major and in the future I hope to attend law school. I started studying French in high school through a program which allowed me to take the bus to my neighboring high school for classes, since my school didn’t offer the language. I fell in love with French culture and language and have been studying it ever since! I love helping people and being a tutor would allow me to practice a language I love while making someone else more confident and motivated about learning a new language too.

Bonjour! I am a first-year Biology major minoring in French and I hope to attend Med School. I began learning French in middle school and continued through high school and now at UIC. I absolutely adore the culture and the way the language sounds, so what else could I do but study it even more? I love being of assistance to people as not only does it allow me to be of help to others, but it also helps me understand the language better. I hope to not only be a helpful tutor, but also a friend one can feel relaxed around and feel as though we are learning together because we are.

Bonjour, I’m Kal! I am a first year student majoring in Biology with a minor in French. I started learning French in middle school because I speak Spanish and thought it would be cool to know a third language. I’m glad I made that decision because I fell in love with French from day one. I live on-campus, but I visit home during the weekend and speak Spanish with my family. I want to inspire others in finding a passion in learning a new language even if they think it’s difficult and confusing at first. I want to be someone that you feel comfortable reaching out to for help. With three languages under my belt, I have tips to make learning easier!

Hey, everyone! I am a junior majoring in Biological Sciences. I grew up in Haiti until I was 14, so I am fluent in French and Haitian Creole. Knowing multiple languages is a pride as it keeps me connected to my Haitian culture and enhances my understanding of other cultures. I decided to become a French peer tutor because I love my language and also know how challenging it is to learn a new language. A lot of people tell me they have a hard time learning French and as a peer tutor I hope UIC students will look past the struggle and fall in love with this beautiful language.

Salut! It is my second year at UIC and I am majoring in the teaching of English. I have been studying French for six years and naturally I am a French peer tutor! I decided to study French in order to read literature from Francophone countries in the original transcription. When I first began studying French I had a really tough time and picked up some helpful study tips that made me get to where I am now: loving learning the language! I started at UIC in FR 104 and I am studying to be an English teacher so I am very excited to be peer tutoring. Learning a language can be difficult but I am looking forward to helping make it a little easier for you.

I am a 4th year student at UIC majoring in Biological Sciences and French and Francophone studies. I´ve had to learn four languages in my life, so I know from experience how challenging it is to learn a new language, how awkward it can be to pronounce certain words or how uncomfortable and uncertain we feel when we speak a new language. I want to share with UIC students my strategies for language learning.

Bonjour! This is my fourth year at UIC, and I am majoring in English and double minoring in French and Management Information Systems. I currently work at the East Campus library and hope to go to graduate school to become a librarian. I started learning French at the 100-level here at UIC because I wanted to read Victor Hugo in the original, and having a goal that seemed so out of reach at first has really helped motivate me to learn French. Watching myself gain the skills needed to understand the books I wanted to read has made me want to help other people get that moment of comprehension. It feels really good to be able to understand a new language and I’m excited to be able to share that with other students.

“I was born on a small island where French is a major part of the language, culture, and history! Like some of you guys, I wasn’t born here and so I had to figure out a way to preserve my language AND fit in with the majority who spoke English. I’m happy to share my tips for that with other UIC students.”

Bonjour! I am a transfer student from the City Colleges of Chicago. I received my associate degree there and transferred to UIC as a junior. My major is Teaching of French and I recently decided to add on an ESL endorsement. I live in the northwest side of Chicago and I work a retail job in a nearby suburb. I started learning French in high school and I fell in love with it right away. I am happy that I followed my passions which lead me to UIC and to pursue teaching as a career path. I also know Greek because it is the language that I grew up with in my home, so I know what it is like to work through the language learning process for multiple languages. I’m very excited about being a peer tutor because I understand what it takes to juggle school, work and life, and I have gathered some tips and tricks that I hope will benefit anyone I share them with!

Bonjour tout le monde!! I am a sophomore Biology major with a minor in French. Once I graduate from UIC, I plan to become a Physician’s Assistant. I live with my family in Manhattan, a tiny town about an hour from Chicago. I transferred from Joliet Junior College to UIC this fall, and due to covid-19, I have never been on campus. I currently work two jobs, Amazon and JCPenney, for 35-40 hours a week. I know it is difficult to work and go to school online, so feel free to contact me if you have any questions. I was born in Haiti and came to the USA in 2010 after the 2010 earthquake. I chose to study French because once I came to the USA, I forgot my native language, Haitian Creole. Here at UIC, I started in French 104, French is very similar to Haitian Creole and I wanted to reconnect with my native roots. As of now, I have fallen in love with the language. I want to be a French tutor because I know how difficult and stressful it is to learn another language; I want to alleviate some of the stress and pressure that students face when learning another language as well as make the process as enjoyable and as simple as possible, by helping students find the best way to be proactive and study. I am looking forward to seeing you at the online French tutoring sessions!

I am currently a junior Biology major, and French minor. I am also fluent in Spanish and English: I find that knowing multiple languages is a beneficial skill. I am a commuter to UIC so I know the difficulties of finding time to practice a new language. Learning a new language on top of another heavy course load major is a lot, but I have learned a few tricks and I would be happy to share tips with anyone else who needs help finding what works best for them.

Hey, y’all! I’m a French major, and really want to go into international non-profit. I also have minors in English, Public Policy, and International Studies. I’ve lived a ton of different places, mostly all over Illinois, and I also lived in France for part of my childhood. I became a peer tutor because I want to help others see the beauty in another language. Not only can you talk to your friends in a language only you two understand, but it also helps you cross boundaries and reach people you never thought you’d meet.

I am majoring in Biology and French on the Pre-Medicine track. During the week I work in a research lab on East Campus and I am also an EMT on weekends. I hope to eventually practice medicine in a Francophone country. Learning French has provided me the opportunity to travel abroad without leaving the classroom. I want to help other students find this enjoyment in French and Francophone language and culture while they strengthen their language skills.

Bonjour à tous, I’m Rica, your friendly French Language Tutor. I’m a French major with a Linguistics minor, which means that I’m still learning just like you. As an immigrant from Tangancicuaro, Michoacan, Mexico, I understand how complicated it is to learn a new language. You can feel like there’s a stigma for making mistakes, which can make learning a language feel frustrating and discouraging. My goal is not only to help you with grammar, pronunciation, etc…. but to make you feel comfortable and at the same time challenge you in this learning adventure you’re undertaking.

Hey y’all! I’m a Junior Teaching of History Major with a French Minor. I’m from Springfield IL, but now commute to campus from Jefferson Park. I decided to learn French because my family heritage is largely French and I wanted to connect with that history. Since I arrived at UIC, I’ve had a very positive experience in the 100-level and upper-level classes here! I’m excited to be a peer tutor and build a further grasp of French with my peers!

Bonjour! I am a third-year psychology major. I was adopted from China as a baby and grew up in Iowa. I took French throughout junior high and high school and did not expect to continue in college. After I switched my major, I needed to fulfill a language requirement and was very nervous to do so. I started in French 103 and I ended up really enjoying the BLP at UIC. I wanted to become a peer tutor because I enjoy helping others and working with other students. I wish I had taken more advantage of peer tutoring when I was first starting to learn French and I think it can be a great resource for all levels of language learning.

Bonjour! I am a ‘Teaching of French’ major, and I am working on my ESL endorsement. I love languages; I am a native Spanish speaker, and my next goal is to learn Italian! I am also a first-generation college student. This is my first semester on campus (I transferred from Loyola last year), so I am looking forward to meeting new people and making diverse connections with my peers. Lastly, I love tutoring because it is a great way to kick start my ‘teaching’ journey and because I love connecting with others through a shared language. I have been learning about cross-linguistic connections that can make the language process more manageable, and I cannot wait to share them with you!

I work about 24 hours a week and rent an apartment with a couple of roommates and commute to UIC. I am also taking French classes (along with Latin) at UIC. I also take a lot of hard science classes, so I know what it’s like to be busy. I want to help others study and learn effectively to maximize your time. I love French and hope that I can help other people love the language as well.
