Listening tips from UIC language students

  • Go to a quiet area with few distractions.
  • Read the questions so you know what to focus on while you listen.
  • Not sure what to do? Contact your teacher and/or a classmate for clarification.
  • Note how much time you have.
  • Note how many times you can listen (usually it’s at least 3 times).
  • Expect to listen more than once–this is totally normal!
  • Mark the questions with clarifying notes and underline/circle the key words.
  • Focus only on answers to the questions you still need to answer.
  • Take notes while you listen.
  • Pause whenever you need to.
