LISTENING TIPS FROM UIC LANGUAGE STUDENTS Heading link
Before starting any listening activity:
- Go to a quiet area with few distractions.
- Read the questions so you know what to focus on while you listen.
- Not sure what to do? Contact your teacher and/or a classmate for clarification.
- Note how much time you have.
- Note how many times you can listen (usually it’s at least 3 times).
- Expect to listen more than once–this is totally normal!
While you listen the first time:
- Mark the questions with clarifying notes and underline/circle the key words.
- Focus only on answers to the questions you still need to answer.
- Take notes while you listen.
- Pause whenever you need to.
- Answer the questions you can with the notes you took and determine what you have left to answer.
While you listen the second time: (if permitted)
- Focus only on answers to the questions you still need to answer.
- Take notes while you listen.
- Pause whenever you need to.
- Answer the questions you can with the notes you took and determine what you have left to answer.
While you listen the third time: (if permitted)
- Focus only on answers to the questions you still need to answer.
- Take notes while you listen.
- Pause whenever you need to.
- Answer the questions you can with the notes you took and determine what you have left to answer.
After listening:
- Go back and answer all the questions, using your notes.
