4.11.2024: Arabic LLA Mustafa’s Linguistic Odyssey

Arabic LLA Mustafa's Linguistic Odyssey. Urdu, Arabic, English.

Growing up in Saudi Arabia as a child of Pakistani descent, my linguistic journey was a tapestry woven with threads of Urdu, Arabic, and, eventually, English. Early on, my parents imparted the richness of Urdu to me, and it became the language of my heart and home. However, at the age of six, I found myself in an Arabic elementary school, embarking on a challenging journey into a language I was not yet fluent in.

Navigating through the complexities of Arabic was no easy feat, but my parents’ commitment to my education led me to a Quran tutoring school, where the study of the holy text became a gateway to mastering the Arabic language. Concurrently, interactions with my brothers, who effortlessly conversed in Arabic, further fortified my grasp on the language. School friendships also played a pivotal role; visiting friends’ homes allowed me to immerse myself in Arabic conversations, gradually unlocking the linguistic puzzle.

By the time I reached the sixth grade, I had conquered the challenges of elementary school, honing my Arabic skills in tandem with my academic growth. Yet, a new linguistic horizon awaited as an English course became mandatory. While initially challenging, it sowed the seeds of a new language journey that would unfold later in life.

Transitioning to high school, my linguistic landscape expanded. The basics of English were now part of my repertoire, but the real test awaited when circumstances led me back to Pakistan for further studies. The familiar sounds of Urdu surrounded me, but English still lingered as an untapped potential. Determined to bridge the gap, I dedicated six months to intensive English studies, leveraging resources like English institutes, YouTube videos, movies, and literature. Slowly but surely, I began to communicate with confidence.

In 2018, my family’s migration to the United States marked a new chapter. Enrolling in a community college, my English education entered a transformative phase. The immersive environment provided the opportunity to refine my speaking, reading, listening, and writing skills to a professional level. The linguistic odyssey, from Urdu to Arabic and finally English, had come full circle.

Today, as I reflect on this journey, I am grateful for the diverse linguistic tapestry that shapes my identity. Each language holds a unique place in my heart, a testament to the resilience and adaptability that defines the human capacity for learning and growth. My experiences navigating the complexities of learning new languages inspired me to become a Language Learning Assistant (LLA). I realized the immense value of personal guidance in mastering a language, and I wish to offer the same support and encouragement to others embarking on their linguistic journeys. This role not only allows me to share the rich insights gained from my own experiences but also aligns with my aspirations of pursuing a career in education, where I can continue to empower students by breaking down language barriers, fostering global understanding, and facilitating communication across diverse cultures.
