The Radical Disorder in Dante's Ordered World

Presented by Professor Dennis Looney, University of Pittsburgh (retired)

Dante is a radical writer and thinker, which makes him an excellent source for later artists who appreciate that edginess. Among them are the African American writers I examine in Freedom Readers from Frederick Douglass to Ralph Ellison, from LeRoi Jones to Amiri Baraka, from Gloria Naylor to Toni Morrison. Dante's interest in transgression for the sake of moral rectitude, his interest in appropriate ways of challenging authority, affect the shape of his poem and its represented world.
